What is a revelation?
God revealing or showing something of himself
What do Catholics believe is the final revelation of God?
Jesus

What do Catholics believe is the first revelation of God?
When God revealed himself to people of Israel through talking to Moses from the burning bush
What does the revelation of Jesus show about God?
Benevolence as God sent Jesus out of love for humans - “For God so loved the world he gave his only son”
Sent Jesus to save humans and lead them back to faith
Sending Jesus was a sacrifice for God
What are religious experiences?
A feeling of the presence of God which fills a person with awe and sometimes fear
What does Numinous mean?
Having a mysterious, spirit or holy quantity
For Catholics what do religious experiences need to include?
The presence of God
What does transcendence mean?
Going beyond human experience and existing outside of the material
What did David humes argue against miracles? (3)
Doesn’t prove God exists because:
could be mass trick or illusion
could be caused by another being
testimony of witnesses isn’t reliable
What is a vision?
A visual appearance from God
What do Catholics believe that visions show?
The loving mysterious nature of God
What are corporeal visions?
Where people physically see something
What are imaginative visions?
Where people see something in dreams or imagination
Why are visions important to Catholics? (5)
Encourage faith Shows loving part of God as he shows guidance through visions Demonstrates mystery of God Could test faith or prompt actions Suggest direct call from God
What is a vision example from the Old Test?
Abraham is visited by God and his vision was fulfilled (shows existence of God)
What is a vision example from the New Test? (plus quote)
In the transfiguration of Jesus, Moses and Elijah appear to Jesus, Peter, James and John
“This is my beloved son”
Non biblical visions?
Joan of Arc, resulted in behaviour change
Why visions lead Catholics to believe in God? (3)
Abrahams vision = fulfilled
Richard Swinburne said if God was real we’d expect some contact and he contacts through visions
Visions can be powerful and strengthen faith
Why are visions NOT proof of existence of God? (4)
No lasting or physical proof
Could be hallucinations
No reason to be seen as proof of God existence
Dreams could be subconcious wanting to have religious experience
What is a miracle?
Something that appears to be breaking the laws of nature or that can’t be explained by science

Jesus healing officials son who wasn’t present
Moses parting the Red Sea

Lourdes - Over 70 people have been healed since 1858 when Bernadatte visited Mary
Why miracles may lead people to believe in existence of God? (3)
God is only explanation
Only God (omnipotent) can break natural laws
Those who experienced may feel personally touched by God
