Belief in no God
Ineffable
Something too great to be expressed in speech
Trinity
The three in one - the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Soul
The part of a human being that makes humans different to other animals
Immortal
Living forever
Eternity
Commonly defined as “forever”, more accurate in a religious context as “without time”
Funeral
The ceremony that takes place at the end of life, usually involving the physical disposal of the body in some way
Cremation
Disposal of a dead body through burning
Burial
Disposal of dead bodies by burning it in the ground
Afterlife
The idea that people have a continued existence on some kind after death
Heaven
Eternal life with God, the place of all good things
Hell
Eternal life without God, a place of suffering and pain
Purgatory
A Catholic belief of a place between heaven and hell where sins are paid for
Limbo
An existence between two states, e.g. Life and death - ghosts are said to be in limbo; traditional Catholic belief places unbaptised babies in limbo, as being unable to enter heaven but undeserving of hell
Resurrection
Physical raising of the body after death
Judgement Day
The last day of the world, when all the dead will be raised by God and given new bodies
Transcendent
God is outside, inside, beyond the universe and space and time
Sin
Something of which God disapproves
Mortal sin
A Catholic sin; a sin so bad it condemns your soul to hell, no matter what else you do in your life
