What causes pheochromocytoma (adrenal tumour)?

A
  • Idiopathic
  • Tumours from adrenal medulla (Chromaffin cells)
  • can invade vena cava and release excessive levels of catecholamines
  • causes hypertension
  • cardiac arrhythmias
  • palpable mass

What is the treatment?

A
  • Adrenolectomy
  • control hypertension with phenoxybezamine
  • control cardiac arrhythmias with propranonol and atenolol and alpha and beta blockers
