What drugs are in the phenothiazine class?
Acepromazine (ACE)
What is ace used for?
Premed, sedative (Good sedation)
Need opioid for better pain control
True tranquilizer
Antiemetic
Antihistamine
Anti-arrhythmic
Mild sedative
Does ACE provide analgesic properties?
No
Is ACE a controlled drug?
No
ACE’s Mode of action
Targets alpha 1 agonist adrenergic receptors
Dopamine antagonist - antiemetic (mu opioids)
Antihistamine- (morphine) perception pathway 🧠
Negatives of phenothiazines
No analgesia
Not reversible
Decreases seizure threshold
Hard on the heart ❤️ Vasodilation- hypotension (dose dependant)
Hypothermia
Prolapse of penis
Breed differences- boxer exaggerated rxns
CAUTION in patients w renal, hepatic and heart valve dz (hemorrhage +/- bleeding disorders)

Decreases anesthesic gas needed
ACE: onset & duration
Onset: 15 min IM or IV
Duration: 4-12 hrs
