Phases Two And Three Aerobic Respiration/Tca And Oxidative Phosphorylation Flashcards

1
Q

Where do the electrons come from that are coming into the electron transport chain?

A

It occurs in the mitochondria in both cellular respiration and photosynthesis. In the former, the electrons come from breaking down organic molecules, and energy is released. In the latter the electrons enter the chain after being excited by light, and the energy released is used to build carbohydrates.

The preparatory reaction occurs where before what cycle?

Q

How many redox reactions are there in the citric acid cycle and where do they occur?

A

There are four oxidation react reduction reactions. Stage three in NAD plus is reduced to NADH. Stage four in NAD plus is reduced to NADH. Stage 6FAD is reduced to FADH plus. Stage 8NAD plus is reduced to NADH.

Q

In summary, what is the purpose of the citric acid cycle?

A

It’s a central catabolic pathway in which compounds derived from the breakdowns of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are oxidised to CO2, with the most energy of oxidation temporarily held in the electron carriers FADH2 and NADH. During aerobic metabolism, these electrons are transferred to O2 and an energy electron flow is conserved as ATP.

Q

In summary describe the citric acid cycle three main points

A

1.the breakdown of pyruvate, released as carbon dioxide

2.enough energy is released as one. Peruvian molecule is metabolised to the following: make one ATP, reduce for NAD plus to form four and ADH, reduce one FAD to form one FADH2

Three occurs in the mitochondrial matrix
