Energy for life Flashcards
We classify organisms by where they source their carbon from, there are two sources autotroph’s and heterotrophs briefly explain the two
Autotroph’s are self nourishing. They build their body from CO2 and Anne, S, P from the environment such as plants.
Heterotrophs build their body from organic carbon, all animals and some bacteria
What are the two classifications by where organisms get their energy from?
Phototrophs and chemotrophs
Briefly describe an oxidation reduction reaction
High energy molecule is losing an electron meaning it’s being oxidised. The low energy molecule or reactant receiving the electron are being reduced.
Briefly explain how and why C is sourced differently for autotroph and heterotrophs
Autotroph’s are organisms that can produce their own food from substances available from their surroundings using photosynthesis or chemosynthesis
Heterotrophs cannot synthesise their own food and rely on other organisms both plants and animals for nutrition
Obtain carbon from inorganic sources like carbon dioxide while heterotrophs get their reduce carbon from other organisms
What does redox mean?
A chemical reaction that takes place between an oxidising substance and a reducing substance. The oxidising substance loses electrons in their reaction, and the reducing substance gains electrons.
