Phases and Classifications of Matter Flashcards
Chapter 1.2 (19 cards)
Matter
Anything that takes up space and has mass
Liquid
A state of matter that has no definite shape but has a definite volume
Solid
A form of matter that has a definite shape and volume
Gas
A form of matter that does not have a definite volume or shape
Plasma
Gaseous state of matter that contains electrically charged particles
Where can plasma be found?
Can be found in high-temperature environments (both man-made and natural)
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object
Weight
A measure the force of gravity on an object
Law of Conservation of Matter
Matter is not created nor destroyed in any chemical or physical change
Pure Substance
A substance that can’t be broken down into simpler substances
Compound
2 or more elements chemically combined
Mixture
A substance made by mixing other substances together
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which different materials can be distinguished easily
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which substances are evenly distributed throughout the mixture
Solution
A mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another
Examples of Heterogeneous Mixture
Salad, trail mix, hamburger, etc.
Example of Compound
Water (H2O)
Examples of Homogenous Mixture
Gatorade, milk, water, etc.
What are the condensed phases?
Solid and Liquid
