Measurement Uncertainty, Accuracy, and Precision Flashcards
Chapter 1.5-1.6
Uncertainty
An estimate of how much a measured or calculated value differs from a true value
Significant Figures
All digits that can be known precisely in a measurement, plus a last estimated digit
Rounding
Expressing a number to the nearest whole number, tenth, hundredth, thousandth, and so on
Precision
Consistent but not close to true value
Accuracy
Inconsistent but closer to the true value
Dimensional Analysis
A mathematical technique that allows you to use units to solve problems involving measurements
Unit Conversion Factor
A ratio of two equivalent quantities expressed with different measurement units
Temperature
A measure of how hot or cold something is
Fahrenheit
A unit of temperature; water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit
