Phases Flashcards

1
Q

As pressure increases, is liquid water or solid water (ice) favored?

A

Liquid water.
The negative slope of the phase diagram for water at the line between liquid and solid shows that at higher temperatures liquid water is favored.

Q

Does H2SO4 or H20 have a higher boiling point?

A

H2SO4
They both have strong hydrogen bonding, but H2SO4 is larger and larger molecules tend to have higher boiling points. Also, H2SO4 has more places to hydrogen bond.

Q

Does water’s melting point increase or decrease with decreasing external pressure?

A

Increases because of the negative solid-liquid boundary in the phase diagram.

Q

What is the temperature of a solution with 1% ice and 99% liquid water?

A

As long as there is ice and liquid water coexisting at equilibrium, the temperature will be 0 degrees Celcius at 1 atm.
