Gas Flashcards
When do real gases deviate the most from ideal gas behavior?
High pressures and low temperatures. Therefore, actual pressure and volume is less than ideal. This is because real gas molecules DO have volume and real gases DO experience intermolecular forces that reduce collisions with the walls of the container.
When are gases most ideal? Under what conditions?
low pressure and temperature
lower molecular weight or smaller size of the molecule
monatomic over diatomic
weaker intermolecular forces
What are assumptions of ideal gas?
No intermolecular forces
Occupy no volume
All collisions perfectly elastic
What is STP
1atm
273 K
Which compound is more like an ideal gas, CH4 methane or NH3 ammonia?
CH4 methane because it does not hydrogen bond, which is a strong intermolecular force.
If there is a sample of gases in a closed container and then a small hole was punctured in the container, which gases will escape fastest?
The gas with the smallest mass because rate of effusion is inversely proportional to the square root of mass
Conversions for 1 atm?
1 atm = 760 torr = 760 mmHg = 101,300 Pascals
