Phase Changes and Substances. Flashcards
What is the triple point?
The point on a phase change diagram where both a solid, liquid and gas co-exist.
What is the critical point?
The point on a phase change diagram where the substance becomes a supercritical fluid and does not undergo a directly noticeable phase change.
What are the lines on a phase diagram called?
The lines of equilibrium.
What is Fusion?
The Melting of solid to liquid phase Change. A positive Entropy.
What is Vaporization?
The phase change from liquid to gas, sometimes called boiling. Positive entropy change.
What is Freezing?
Phase change from Liquid to solid. Negative Entropy.
What is Condensation?
Phase change from gas to liquid. Negative Entropy.
What is Sublimation?
Phase change from solid to gas (think of Dry Ice CO2). Positive entropy change.
What is Deposition?
Phase change from Gas to solid, think of snow. Negative entropy change.
What side of an exothermic equation is favored when heat is added?
The reactants.
