Electronic Structure. Flashcards
What is Planck’s constant?
6.626 x 10-34 J*S
What is the Speed of light?
3.00 x 108M*S
M= Meters
What equation to use to find the energy/ Wave length of a Photon?
E= hc/λ
h?
Planck’s Constant
c?
Speed of light.
What are the units of E= hc/λ
M/S/J
Meters/ Seconds /Joules
What does S-1 mean?
Per second, the negative exponent is meant to represent “per” and can be squared or cubed in some cases. in Frequency this is used to show the number of waves passed per second.
Equation for Energy/ Frequency of a Photon?
E=hv
What is v?
v is the Frequency
What are the units of E=hv
J/S/ (Hz or S-1)
What electronic Transitions emit the most energy?
Transitions from the highest to lowest levels will emit the most energy, so N2 to N1 will emit more energy than N4 to N3
What is a Quantum number?
A unique number of a specific electrom within an atom.
What are the quantum orders?
N, ℓ, Mℓ, & Ms
What is Quantum n?
The level the electron is in, can be 1-8
EX: an electron represented by 4s3 n=4
What is Quantum ℓ?
The quantum sublevel # and represents the shape of the sublevel. This number is from the SPDF of the ground state electron configuration. S=0, P=1, D=2, F=3.
