Pharynx Flashcards
Pharyngeal tonsil
located in the pharyngeal recess
adenoids-enlarged inflamed pharyngeal tonsils
can obstruct nasopharynx, can spread to tubal tonsils impairing hearing and can ever spread to middle ear causing otitis media
Salpingopharyngeal fold
fold of mucosa ovelyting salpingopharyngeus m.
runs down from Torus tubarius
tubal tonsil
lymphoid tissue located near th opening of the auditory tube (torus tubarius)
Salpingopharyngeus m.
runs from cartilage of auditory tube and runs down to thyroid cartilage
assists other mm with swallowing
innervated by vagus
fauces
passageway from mouth to oropharynx
palatoglossal m
fold of mucosa over palatoglosssus is the arch
from soft palate to tongue
pulls tongue and soft palate together during swallowing
Closes teh fauces
palatopharyngeal m.
from soft palate to the thyroid cartilage
innervated by vagus
swallowing
tonsillar bed
deepresion bw palatoglossal and palatopharyngeal folds
formed by superior constrictor, hyoglossus, middle constrictor
epiglottic valleculae
depressions b/w the epiglottis and posterior tongue formed by lateral and median glossoepiglottic folds (membranes that connect the posterior tongue to the palate)
piriform recess
depression lateral to larynx
internal laryngeal n. runs deep to mucosa of the piriform recess
**if a swallowed object damages the mucosa of the piriform recess it can damage the internal laryngeal n. (think fish bones)
fascias of pharynx
pharyngobasilar fascia lines the inside of all muscles while buccopharyngeal covers the external layer of muscle
Superior constrictor
circular oriented m. forming superior portion of phayrnx
attaches to skull
swallowing
n: vagus via pharyngeal plexus
middle constrictor
runs from middle pharynx to the hyoid
swallowing
n: vagus via pharyngeal plexus
inferior constrictor
runs from inferior pharynx and attaches to the thyroid and cricoid cartilages
swallowing
n: vagus via pharyngeal plexus
Stylopharyngeus
from styloid to thyroid cartilage
swallowing
