Pharynx Flashcards
Pharynx description
Midline muscular pathway for ingestion of food and for respiration
Pharynx arises from ____ to ____
Base of skull
C6
Divided into
3 sections
Naso + oro + laryngopharynx
Pharyngeal wall has
4 layers
Mucosa + submucosa (tough fascia) + muscular + loose connective tissue
Anterior to pharynx
Nose + mouth
Posterior to pharynx
Retropharyngeal space , prevertebral fascia , upper six cervical vertebrae
Superior to pharynx
Sphenoid (body) , occipital (basilar region) bones
Inferior to pharynx
Continue to esophagus
Pharynx constrictor muscles
3 paired muscles
Inf + mid+ sup constrictors
Pharynx elevator muscles
Stylopharyngeus
Salpingopharynngeus
Paltopharyngeus
Swallowing phase1
Food bolus pushed towards oropharynx by tongue
Swallowing phase2
respiration is halted, the oropharynx and nasopharynx close, the larynx is elevated, constricted and pushed forward, and the bolus passes over (protective) the epiglottis into the pharynx.
Constrictor muscles ensure the consecutive propulsion into the oesophagus
Swallowing phase3
once it is in the esophagus, peristaltic waves ensure the progression of the bolus to the stomach
Pharynx arteries
ascending pharyngeal, facial, maxillary, lingual (to epiglottis) and both thyroid arteries
Pharynx Venous
Pharyngeal plexus into int jugular
