Remote Pharmacy Services Using an Emergency Medication Kit

A

Class A or C or Class E within 20 miles of a facility may provide pharmacy services to facilities using an emergency medication kit; US Department of VA or other federally operated pharmacies to provide pharmacy services using an emergency medication kit
Application to TSBP is required before providing services
If an automated system is being used solely for emergency medication kits, a DEA registration is not required
Access is limited to pharmacist and health care personnel
Contents are determined by consultant pharmacy, PIC, medical director, director of nursing (Texas does NOT have specific quantity limits or a list of specific drugs)
Stocking must be done by a pharmacist, tech or tech trainee unless uses barcoding, microchip, etc
Record must be maintained if all drugs sent and returned
A perpetual inventory of all controls is required

Remote pharmacy services using automated pharmacy systems

A

Class A or C pharmacies to provide pharmacy services to home and community support service agencies like hospice, nursing homes, related institutions, assisted living facilities, intermediate care facilities for the mentally retarded, jails are prisons
Drugs may only be maintained in a automated pharmacy system
If controls are to be stored and dispensed from the automatic system at another location, DEA registration must be obtained for the remote location in the name of the pharmacy providing the remote pharmacy services
An application to TSBP is required prior to providing these services
A pharmacist may supervise operation electronically and shall control all operations of the system and approve the release of the initial dose
Drugs must be in original manufacturing containers or prepacked
Stocking must be done by pharmacist, tech or tech trainee
Record of all drugs sent and returned must be maintained
Perpetual inventory of all controlled substances is required
