In a class of drugs called biguanides.
Helps to control the amount of glucose in your blood by decreasing the amount of glucose absorbed from the food you eat and the amount of glucose made by the liver. Also increases your body’s resistance to insulin. Not used to treat type 1 diabetes.
Metformin 
In a class of medication‘s called sulfonylureas.  lowers blood sugar by causing the pancreas to produce insulin and helping the body use insulin efficiently. This medication will only help lower blood sugar in people whose bodies produce insulin naturally. Not used to treat type 1 diabetes
Glipizide
Helps lower blood sugar by causing the pancreas to produce insulin and helping the body use insulin efficiently. This medication will only help lower blood sugar in peoples who’s bodies produce insulin naturally not used to treat type 1 diabetes
Glimepiride
Unset 10 to 30 minutes, peak 3 to 5 hours, administer before meals.
Insulin lispro (Humalog), insulin aspart (Novolog), insulin glulisine (Epidra)
Rapid acting insulin
Onset 30 to 60 minutes, peak up to 12 hours, administer before meals.
Regular insulin (Humulin R, Novolin R)
Short acting insulin
Onset 1.5 to 4 hours, peak up to 24 hours, administer for glycemic control between meals and at night.
NPH insulin 
Intermediate acting insulin
Onset 45 mins to 4 hours, peak up to 24 hours, administer once daily at the same time.
Insulin glargine (Lantus), insulin detemir (Levimir)
