Pharmacology Lecture 9_Unusual bacteria Flashcards
How is Rickettsiaceae spread, what is survival mode
It is typically transmited through tick bites. It survives as an intra cellular parasite
What are the 3 unique features of mycoplasma
1) the do not have a cell wall
2) They are the smallest self replicating organisium (genome of only 500 genes)
3) They use cholesterol in their cell membrane (not typical in bacteria
What is unique about cell walls mycobacteria?
They contain mycolic acid in their cell walls. This makes them very hardy
What is the use of an acid fast stain?
Acid fast stains are used to identify mycobacteria by staining the mycolic acid in their cell walls pink.
What is the most common presentation of mycoplasma infections?
Atypical pneumonia (walking pneumonia)
What kind of infection do mycoplasma cause and what is there main virulence effect?
They typically attach to the epithilial cells of the UT and respitory system through adhesion complexes. They then secrete radical oxidative species
What kind of life cycle does chlamydia have? How do you culture it
Chlamydia exists in an enviornmentally stable form called a n Elementary Body (EB) that will get taken into a cell where it starts to divid and forms what is called reticular bodies.
Chlymidia is an obligate parasite so it is difficult to culture and requires a host.
What percentage of the population can develope an infection from mycobacteria leprae
5%
What lab tests can be done to identify legionella
Sputum culture, and urin antigen test
What media is used to culture legionella, what is its shape
It is cultured on Buffered Charcol Yeast Extract Agar. It forms gram negative rods
What medium is used to culture mycobacteria tuberculosis?
lowenstein jensen, which is very nutriant rich and contains anti biotics to inhibit the growth of many bacteria
