Pharmacology Lecture 1_Intro to infectious diseases Flashcards
What is the interferon pathway?
IFN alpha and beta are released an infected cell. This is received by near cells. Interferon activated cells produce eIF 2 sigma protein kinase and Oligo adenylate synthase. These are both activated by dsRNA. eIF 2 sigma kinase inactivates the transcription factor eIF 2 sigma and oligo adynalate synthase creates 2’5’ oligo adenylic acid which activates RNAse
What are the five catigories of infectious agents. Identify if cellular vs subcellular.
1) Parisite - cellular
2) Fungi - cellular
3) Bacteria - cellular
4) Virus - subcellular
5) Prion - subcellular
What 7 host factors influence immune response
1) Genetics
2) Age
3) Hormones
4) Nutrition
5) Personal Habbits
6) Fever
7) Microbiom
What are the 4 types of vaccinations and what type of immune response do they elicit
1) Inactivated pathogen - pathogen is chemically inactivated prior to injection. The pathogen does not replicate. This causes a be cell (anti body) response.
2) Attenuated live - A non infectious strain of a pathogen is selected and injected. The pathogen does replicate which results in both a B and T cell response
3) Subunit purified antigen - an antigen surface protein (epitop) is created and purified for injection. This causes a B cell (antibody) response
4) Toxoid - injection of an inactive toxin. Causes a b vell response.
