Pharmacology Lecture 12_DNA Viruses Flashcards
What are two more herpesviruses?
Epstein-Barr virus (which causes mononucleosis), cytomegalovirus
What are 4 important features of Herpesvirus
Genome is linear double stranded DNA, Able to establish latent infections, it encodes its own DNA polymerase, it is enveloped
human herpesviruses 6 and 7 cause what?
roseola, T cell lymphotropic
what 4 disieases does poxvirus cause
small pox, vaccinia, molluscum contagiosum, monkeypox
What are two clinically significant effects of papillomaviruses
they cause wart-like lesions, high risk human papilloma viruses can contribute to the formation of genital cancers.
What are two important features of Hepadnaviridae
Genome is partially double stranded circular DNA, capsid is enveloped and envelope contains viral surface antigens
Which is easier to treat, A virus that uses the uses the host cell’s DNA ploymerase or one that has its own? Why?
A virus that has it’s own DNA polymerase will be easier to treat becasue it is something that is unique to the virus. In fact, this is the target of many anti viral agents.
human herpesvirus 8 causes what?
Kaposi sarcoma
What disease states can adenovirus cause?
acute respitory disease, conjunctivitis, and gastroenteritis
What are the 4 important features of Parvoviride
They are very small, They are naked, Their genome is liner ssDNA, replication only occures in activly dividing cells
What are the 4 important features of Polyomaviridae
Polyomaviridae is heat stable and solubilization resistant, genome is circular dsDNA, it replicates in the nucleus and stimulates cell DNA sysnthesis
What is the most clinically significant parvovirus? What does it do?
Human parvovirus B19 replicates in immature erythroid cells causeing cell death. It is common in children an produces red spotted cheeks.
What disease does hepadnavirus cause and what are its effects?
Hepititis B (both acute and chronic infections). This often results in sever liver damage and can leave a patient more prone to liver cancer
varicella-zoster virus (a human herpes virus) causes what?
chickenpox and shingles
What are 4 important features of Poxvirdae?
Large linear covalently closed dsDNA genome, contains about 100 proteins (many with enzymatic activity), replication occures entierly within the cell cytoplasm, enveloped
