Pharmacology Flashcards
What is the therapeutic window or range of a drug?
the range of a drug serum concentration associated with a high degree of efficacy and a low risk of undesired dose related adverse reactions
What is the therapeutic index of a drug?
the ratio between the toxic dose and therapeutic dose of a drug used as a measure of the relative safety of the drug for a particular treatment. A drug with a narrow therapeuti index may cause toxic results with small changes in dosess
What class of drug is atropine?
anticholinergic
Why is atropine frequently used before and during surgery in small animals?
to reduce or prevent secretions of the respiratory tract and to reduce bradycardia
what kind of drug is guaifenesin?
a neuromuscular blocker
For what purpose is guaifenesin commonly used?
it is used in equine and bovine surgery to selectively depress transmission of nerve impulses at the internucial neurons of the spinal cord, brainstem and subcortical regions of the brain.
what are the symptoms of neuromuscular blocker overdose?
increased risk for hypotension, histamine release and prolonged muscle blockade
