Q
Explain how x-rays are produced in an x-ray machine
A
The x-ray tube is made up of an anode and cathode in a vacuum within a glass envelope surrounded by a lead housing. The cathode has 1 or 2 filaments in a focusing cup. The filament is heated to a critical temperature, the electrons are boiled off and form an electron cloud in the focusing cup. The electrons are accelerated rapidly toward the cathode. The collision produces heat and x-rays. the x-rays are directed downward through the window of the tube by the angle of the anode.
2
Q
What material is the filament in a x-ray tube made of and why?
A
It is typically made of a tungsten alloy because it has a high melting point
