Pharmacology Flashcards
What is an agonist?
A chemical that heightens the effect of neurotransmitters, faking more. It also extends prolongs the effect of neurotransmitters in the synapse
Antagonist
Chemical that slows the effect of neurotransmitters. Prevents the binding of neurons by blocking receptor sites on the membrane.
What is pharmacology?
A branch of scientific study
The antagonist …the action and …receptor sites
Opposes blocks
Examples of antagonists
Snakes, plants, insects, alcohol
What does alcohol do?
It is a depressant, increases the effect of dopamine and increases the GABA
What does the curare plant do?
It slows down the activity in neurons and muscles. It is a powerful muscle relaxant
What is an ex of an agonist?
It mimics the effect of neurotransmitters: nicotine (stimulant like acetylcholine) and cocaine ( like dopamine
What makes up the PNS?
The somatic ns and the autonomic ns
Somatic?
Voluntary and muscles and sensory receptors.
Autonomic?
Controls the automatic and involuntary function.
What makes up the somatic?
The sensory division : nerves carry info to CNS
The motor division: nerves carry info from CNS
What is the autonomic made of?
The sympathetic NS and the parsympathecic Ns
Sympathetic NS?
When stimulated preps body for action. Contains the amygdala which regulates emotions and releases chemicals to the brain
Parasympathetic NS?
Controls organs and restores the body to its equilibrium. For example can slow breathing and heart rate
