Pharmacology Flashcards
Opioids: Action
pain-relief for severe pain through stimulation of opioid receptors in CNS, also used to assist w/ dependency/withdrawal
Glucocorticoids: Action
provide hormonal, anti-inflammatory, metabolic effects, suppression of articulate/ systemic disease/chronic conditions
Anti-rheumatics: Action
slow/halt progression of rheumatic disease early on in disease process- induce remission by inhibiting immune response
Nonopioids: Action
pain-relief, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic properties through reduction of prostaglandin formation
Opioids: Indications
mod-severe pain, induction of conscious sedation for procedure, management of opioid dependence, relief of severe/ persistent cough
Opioids: Side Effects
mood swings, sedation, confusion, vertigo, dulled cognitive function, orthostatic hypotension, constipation, discoordination, dependence, tolerance
Opioids: Examples
morphine, oxycodone, codeine
Glucocorticoids: Indications
hormone replacement therapy, anti-inflammatory/immunosuppressants for rheumatic, respiratory, and other disorders
Glucocorticoids: Side Effects
atrophy, gastrointestinal distress, glaucoma, adrenalcortical suppression, drug-induced Cushing syndrome, weakened/breakdown of supporting tissues, mood changes, hypertension
Glucocorticoids: Examples
hydrocortisone, prednisone, dexamethasone
Anti-rheumatics: Indications
rheumatic disease, preferably early on
Anti-rheumatics: Side Effects
nausea, headache, joint pain/swelling, toxicity, gastrointestinal distress, sore throat. Fever, liver dysfunction, hair loss, potential sepsis, retinal damage
Anti-rheumatics: Examples
methotrexate, ridaura, humira, enbrel
Non-opioids: Indications
mild-mod pain, fever, headache, muscle ache, inflammation, primary dysmenorrhea, reduce risk of myocardial infarction
Non-opioids: Side Effects
nausea, vomiting, vertigo, abd pain, gastrointestinal distress/ bleeding, ulcers, potential Reye syndrome in children
