Other Terminology Flashcards
Bursistis
caused by acute/ chronic inflammation of bursae
symptoms = limited AROM 2nd to pain and swelling
Contusion
sudden blow to part of body resulting in severe damage to superficial and deep structures
Tx: AROM, ice, compression
Edema
increased volume of fluid in soft tissue outside joint capsule
Effusion
increased volume of fluid within joint capsule
Genu Valgum
knees touch while standing w/feet separated- will increase compression of lateral tibial condyle & stress to medial structures
aka “knock-knees”
Genu Varum
bowing of legs w/ added space between knees while standing w/feet together- will increase compression of medial tibial condyle & stress to lateral structures
aka “bow-legged”
Kyphosis
excessive curvature of spine in posterior direction, usually in thoracic spine
causes: osteoporosis, compression fracture, poor posture 2nd to paralysis
Lordosis
excessive curvature of spine in anterior direction, usually in lumbar spine
Causes: weak abs, pregnancy, excessive weight in abdominal area, hip flexion contracture
Q angle
degree of angulation present when measuring from mid-patella to ASIS & to tibial tubercle
Normal: 13˚ for male, 18˚ for female
Excessive can lead to pathology & abnormal tracking
Sprain
acute injury involving ligament
Grade 1 sprain
mild plain & swelling, little-no tear of ligament
Grade 2 sprain
moderate pain & swelling, minimal instability of joint, min-mod tearing of ligament, decreased ROM
Grade 3 sprain
severe pain and swelling, substantial joint instability, total tear of ligament, substantial decrease in ROM
Strain
injury involving musculotendinous unit that involves muscle,/ tendon/ attachment to bone
Grade 1 Strain
localized pain, minimal swelling, tenderness
