Side effects- a known effect has nothing to do with the reason youre taking the drug

age, body mass (weight), temperature, etc.
drug detoxification mainly takes place in the
liver
intramuscular injection (IM)
needle placed in middle of large muscle. 90-degree angle to skin (2-5 ml)
subcutaneous injection (SQ or sub Q)
fat layer. needle is a 45-degree angle to the skin (doesn’t exceed 1ml)
intravenous (IV)
fastest and most accurate
Rectal, oral, intraosseous (IO)
Rectal- PR
Oral- PO
IO- needle through bone marrow
drug excretion
elimination of toxic or inactive metabolites from the body which primarily take place in the kidneys
Nitroglycerin
indication- chest pain
dose- .4mg every 5 minutes up to 3 times
contradiction- BP less than 100
Oral glucose
indication- low glucose levels
dose- 25-50 grams
contradiction- don’t give if nauseated
Activated charcoal
Indication: oral overdose/poisoning
dose- suspension 25-50 grams, or .5-1gram/kg
contradiction- if nauseated prior to the charcoal
Epi-pen
indication- severe allergic reaction, dyspnea and lowering BP
dose- .3 adult and .15 child
contradiction- none in emergency
Albuterol
indication- dyspnea to bronchospasms or congestion
dose- MDI total 180mcg or nebulizer 2.5mg in 3ml
contradiction- none in emergency
