What is Liothyronine?
Synthetic sodium salt of iodothyronine.
What are drugs used for hypothyroidism?
Liothyronine, Liotrix, Levothyroxine.
What is the action of liothyronine?
Orally (90% absorbed from GI), rapid onset of action.
What is the duration of liothyronine?
Peak effect & duration of action are relatively short.
What is Liotrix?
A mixture of T4 & T3 in the ratio of 4:1
What is the action of liotrix?
Orally active.
What is levothyroxine?
Synthetic sodium salt of thyroxine, has long half-life & better tolerated than liothyronine & liotrix.
What is the action of levothyroxine?
Orally effective (less absorbed than liothyronine) & has slower onset of action when given orally.
What are the therapeutic uses for the thyroid hormone drugs?
1- hashimoto disease. 2- myxedema. 3- simple goiter. 4- Replacement therapy 5- TSH- dependent carcinomas
What are the adverse effect of hypothyroidism drugs?
Same as hyperthyroidism (tachycardia, palpitations, iatrogenic hyperthyoidism, anxiety, angina, hear intolerance).
