Pharmacokinetics And Pharmacodynamics Flashcards
Pharmacokinetics
What the body does with the drug
Absorption
Movement of a substance from site of admin across body membranes to circulating fluid
- determines how long before drug takes effect
Distribution
The transport of pharmacological agents through the body
Metabolism
Meds aka bio transformation changing the medication to a form more easily excreted by the body
LIVER!
First bypass effect
Med may be rendered inactive as it goes through the liver because of the breakdown of composition
Blood Brain barrier
Only allows certain things into the area of the brain
- sedatives and anti-anxiety meds pass
- anti cancer drugs DO NOT pass
Excretion
The removal of drugs from the body
KIDNEY
Loading dose
Usually a higher dose of the med given at one Ive
2x normal dose
Maintenance Dose
This tends to be the daily dose that a patient will take as long as they are on the drug
Therapeutic Range
The dosage range or serum concentration that achieves the drugs desired effect
Therapeutic Index
The range between a drugs lethal dose and its effective dose
Half life
Length of time required for plasma concentration of drug to decrease by one half after administration
- longer half life = longer the drug stays in the system
Pharmacodynamics
What the drug does to the body
Receptors
A macromolecule to which a medication binds to produce an effect
Exist in the body for hormones, NT and growth factors to bind to
Agonist
A drug that mimics the effect of an endogenous molecule
