Pain, Fever, Inflammation Drugs Flashcards
NSAID
Ibuprofen, Aspirin
Ibuprofen
TC:
-analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic
PC:
- NSAID, non selective COX inhibitor
Action:
- inhibits conversion of arachidonic acid into COX, inhibits prostaglandins
Consider:
- monitor bleeding
- GI distress
Aspirin
TC:
- analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic
PC:
- NSAID, non selective COX inhibitor, salicylate
Action:
- inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
Consider;
- monitor bleeding
- GI distress
- Steven Johnsons
Steven Johnsons Syndrome
Reaction to med (NSAID, acetaminophen)
Cause skin to redden, blister, rash
Watery eyes
Throat pain, cough
Starts with flu symptoms
Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
TC:
- analgesic, anti-pyretic
PC:
- analgesic
Action:
- inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins in the brain
Consider:
- do not exceed max dose
- hepatotoxic
Morphine
TC:
- analgesics
PC:
- opioid agonist
Action:
- inhibits pain sensation in brain
Consider:
- resp depression, sedation
- may need stool softener
- 2 nurses must sign off
Naloxone (Narcan)
TC:
- reversal agent
PC:
- CNS opioid antagonist
Action:
- competes with opioids at receptor site in brain
Consider:
- patient might experience opioid withdrawal
Methadone
TC:
- opioid analgesic
PC:
- long acting opioid agonist
Action:
- desensitizes multiple pain receptors in brain
- blocks cravings and euphoria
Use:
- helps taper off opioids
Sumatriptan
TC:
- vascular headache suppressant
PC:
- serotonin (5-HT) agonist
Action:
- causes vasoconstriction of BV in the head
Consider:
- not preventative
- Tristan rush
Prednisone
TC:
- potent anti-inflammatory
PC:
- corticosteroid
Action:
- Dec inflammation
- suppress immune system
Consider:
- GI distress
- Cushings Syndrome (7 S’s)
