Pharmacodynamics Flashcards
Define pharmacodynamics.
Effect of the drug on the body
What structures do drugs interact with in the body?
Ion channels IonPumps Receptors Enzymes Cell Membranes
Define Ligand.
A ligand is a drug or endogenous substance which binds to a receptor or other biological molecule and elicits a response.
What causes ion channels to open?
Ion channels are opened when stimulated by ligands or voltage.
Define active transport.
When energy is required to be used to bring ions across a membrane but against the concentration gradient.
Define Receptor.
Is a specific protein that is capable of binding the members of a specific group of drugs or endogenous substances.
Define Enzyme.
Enzymes are chemical catalysts that accelerate biochemical reactions in the body.
Define agonist.
Drugs with high affinity and have high intrinsic activity.
Define antagonist.
Drugs with high affinity but have no intrinsic activity.
Define competitive antagonist.
these compete for the same receptor as an agonist
Define non-competitive antagonist.
these drugs bind to a place other than the endogenous ligand binding site and incapacitate the receptor.
Define partial angonist.
These act on a receptor but without the maximum effect as an effect
