ampoule (amp)
sealed glass container for sterile preparations (ampoule) intended for parenteral administration.
capsule (cap)
a special container made of gelatin for a single dose of an oral drug. The enclosure prevents the patient from tasting the drug.
compound (comp)
two or more chemicals united chemically into one substance
elixir (elix)
a sweetened aromatic, hydro-alcoholic liquid used in compounding of oral medicines.
drops (gtt)

inhaler, puffer
device for administering medicines by inhaling
irrigating solutions, lavages
the cleansing of a canal/cavity or wound by washing with water or other fluids to remove irritants or poisons.
gavage
introducing of liquid food into the stomach by way of a tube.
lozenge
dry medicinal solid, held in the mouth until it dissolves.
ointment (ung)
a medicated, fatty, soft substance having antiseptic, cosmetic, or healing properties. An external application with a base of lard, lanolin, or petroleum jelly in which the remedy is incorporated.
slow release (SR)
an oral drug designed to slowly release into the body for continuous, long lasting effect.
suppository (supp)
a drug in solid form introduced into the rectum, urethra, or vagina so that it dissolves by body temperature, often serves as a vehicle for medicines to be absorbed.
suspension (susp)
state of a solid when its particles are mixed with, but not dissolved in, a fluid.
tablet (tab)
a small flat compressed piece of solid drug
topical
direct application of a medication to the skin, eye, ear, or other parts of the body.
