Pharmaceutical Calculations Exam 1 Flashcards
What is pharmaceutical calculation
Involves the application of fundamental mathematical principles in the preparation, safe handling, and effective utilization of medications
Mistakes are serious
Remember your responsibilities when you calculate and give a dose
Know how to calculate and be accurate
E-Prescribing
Prescribers write and send prescriptions to a participating pharmacy electronically instead of using handwritten or faxed notes or calling in prescriptions
Iowa HF 2377 law
Beginning January 1st, 2020, Iowa mandates the electronic transmission of all prescriptions
Exemptions:
Nursing homes, long-term care facilities
Dispensed by VA
Compounded preparations
Specific Gravity
Water volume/actual volume
17 g material added to 180 ml water gives 195.6 ml of solution
Specific gravity = 197/195.6 = 1.007
Apparent Density
Small part of problem density
17 g of material + 180 ml water = 195.6 ml total
17 / 15.6 = 1.09
Buffer equations for weak acid
HA <-Ka-> H+ + A-
Ka = (H+)(A-)/(HA)
pKa = -log((H+)(A-)/(HA))
pKa = pH - log(A-)/(HA)
pH = pKa + log(A-)/(HA)
