Virulence factors
Host infection definition
Capable of sustaining growth of other organisms
Infection (Colonization)
Presence of an organism in or on a host; not all are detrimental
Virulence definition
Disease producing potential
Pathogens definition
High virulence, always associated with disease
Opportunistic pathogens definition
Normally not disease-producing, but able to produce S/S in some conditions, immune compromised hosts, etc
Infectious Agents Prion Details
Small protease resistant proteins
Derived from neurons, capable of converting others to abnormal proteins
Accumulation = neuronal dysfunction
Results in transmissible neurodegenerative diseases: Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, dementia
Mode of infection: Injection, transplantation of infected tissue, contaminated medical devices
Treatment challenges: No reproduction/metabolic functions
Infectious Agents Viruses Details
Obligate intracellular pathogens
Protein coat +RNA/DNA
Incapable of replication outside of the host
Can cause cell lysis, latency, and oncogenesis
Infectious Agents Bacteria Details
