Q

Propofol

A

✓ is used for both moderate and general anesthesia

✓ When propofol is being administered to a client, emergency resuscitation equipment must be readily available

✓ Propofol is a lipid-based emulsion, and if given for prolonged periods or in conjunction with total parenteral nutrition, serum lipids must be monitored because of the risk for hyperlipidemia

Propofol is a medication that causes sedation. This induction agent is commonly used before the client is given a neuromuscular blocker such as succinylcholine or rocuronium. The healthcare provider gives propofol intravenous push (IVP), followed by a continuous infusion. The purpose of this medication is to sedate the client to prevent them from fighting the procedure and promote client comfort. An alternative to propofol could be midazolam, a benzodiazepine with a rapid onset of action.

Q

Acrocyanosis

A

is often seen in healthy newborns and refers to the peripheral cyanosis around the mouth and the extremities (hands and feet). Unlike other causes of peripheral cyanosis with significant pathology (e.g., septic shock), acrocyanosis is a harmless condition caused by benign vasomotor changes that result in peripheral vasoconstriction and increased tissue oxygen extraction. Additionally, acrocyanosis is further differentiated from peripheral cyanosis as acrocyanosis occurs immediately after birth in healthy infants and is a common finding, at times persisting for 24 to 48 hours.
