What are the A/E of the Local anesthetics? (“Caines”)
- CNS excitation followed by depression
- Bradycardia, decreased contractions, MI.
- Labor and Delivery: Depressed uterine contractions. Can cross the placenta.
- Methemoglobinemia: (benzocaine)
What are the A/E of the general anesthetics?
- N/V
- bradycardia, respiratory and cardiac depression.
- Dysrythmia
- MALIGNANT HYPERTHERMIA
- aspiration of gastric contents
- spontaneous abortions.
What are the uses of the Opioids?
- Pain (best for dull pain)
- Cough suppression
- COPD (it eases air hunger)
What are the A/E of the Opioids?
- Respiratory depression
- Constipation
- Orthostatic Hyptension
- Urinary retention
- Cough suppression
- N/V
- Increased ICP
- Miosis
- TERATOGENIC
What is the drug of choice for Migraines?
Ergotamine
What drugs should you never mix with the “triptans?”
Ergo Alkyloids
Are headache meds ok to take while pregnant?
NO. Most of them are teratogenic.
If a diabetic gets pregnant, what do they need to make sure they do?
Take Insulin and stay away from oral meds for diabetes!
How does alcohol effect insulin?
It lowers the amount of insulin needed.

6) “gliptins.” Pancreatitis and anaphylaxis

- Levothyroxine
- Liothyronine
- Liotrix
- Thyroid
- Overmedication causes symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
What meds are used to treat Hyperthyroidism (graves disease)?
- Propylthiouracil (PTU), Methimazole
- Radioactive Iodine
- Lugol’s Solution, Sodium Iodide, Potassium Iodide
What are the A/E of PTU? Can it be taken during pregnancy?
- hypothyroidism symptoms, agranulocytosis, hepatitis
- It is safe through the first trimester ONLY.
What are the A/E of Radioactive Iodine?
Radiation sickness, hypothyroidism, myeosupression
What are the A/E of Lugol’s Solution?
Iodism (sore teeth, gums, metallic taste, rash, headache)
