PHAK Chapter 3: Aircraft Construction Flashcards
What is a category of aircraft?
Category of aircraft is broken down into Airplane, roto-craft, glider, lighter than air, and weight shift control
What is an advanced Avionics aircraft?
Advanced Avionics Aircraft is an aircraft with a GPS and autopilot.
What are the five main parts of the aircraft?
- Wings
- Power Plant
- Empenage
- Fuselage
- Landing Gear
What are wings and what are their functions?
Wings can be located either high, medium, or low. They are the main proponent of lift. Composed of Ribs, stringers, and Spars. Also composed of ailerons and flaps. They are two airfoils. Connected to the fuselage
What is the empanage?
Located on the rear of the airplane. Connected to the fuselage. Composed of 3 parts. The Vertical Stabilator and Horizontal Stabilator. The Vertical Stabilizer is also has a rudder that affects YAW. The Horizontal Stabilizer can either be composed of an elevator and trim, or a stabilator and Trim.
What is the Power Plant?
The power plant is composed of the engine and propeller. It produces thrust. It is covered by a cowling that houses the engine. The engine also provides heat to the aircraft as well as a vacuum for instruments
What is the fuselage?
The fuselage is the body of the airplane. It houses the pilot, passengers, baggage, etc. It also acts as the connection point of the wings, empanage, and power plant, landing gear as well.
What is the landing gear?
The landing gear is connected to the fuselage and is what supports the airplane on the ground and all ground operations including taxiing, parking, departure and landing. You can either have a tailwheel or nose wheel landing gear with two bases.
What is the airplanes surface?
The airplane is a semimonocoque airplane made up of composite.
What are the three aviation products that must be certified by the FAA?
Engine, propeller, and aircraft. The certificate they need is a Type Certificate (TC)
