PH Flashcards
What is a normal ph?
7.35-7.45
A pH less than 7.35 is considered what?
Acidic
A pH greater than 7.45 is considered what?
alkalotic
Does the body like it when the pH is messed up?
NO
Can a messed up pH be dangerous?
YES
Can a person die from alkalosis or acidosis?
YES (coma too)
A acidotic person will appear what?
lethargic
A alkalotic person will appear what?
excitable (d/t nervous system)
How does the body keep the pH within normal ranges?
compensation
How do the kidneys respond to pH changes?
Remove excess acid and bicarb by excreting them through urine
Can the kidneys also retain hydrogen and bicarb and return it to the blood?
Yes
How long do the kidneys take to compensate for pH changes?
Hours to days
What is one way the lungs get rid of CO2?
Exhale
Hyperventilation does what to CO2? making the person acidotic or alkalotic?
Decrease CO2 and alkalosis
Hypoventilation does what to CO2? and makes a person alkalotic or acidic?
increases CO2 and acidosis
