Metabolic acidosis Flashcards
Which organ has the problem?
Kidney
Which organ is going to compensate?
Lungs
What chemical will the lungs compensate with?
CO2
Which kidney chemicals are causing the problem?
Bicarb and hydrogen
Too much or too little bicarb?
Too little
Too much or too little hydrogen?
Too much
pH low or high?
low
Will respiratory rate increase or decrease?
Increase (rid acid)
What are causes of metabolic acidosis?
- DKA
- Starvation
- Renal failure
- Severe diarrhea
Why does DKA and starvation cause metabolic acidosis?
-cells starving –> break down fat for energy –> ketones –> acidosis
Why does severe diarrhea cause metabolic acidosis?
Lower GI = think base, so losing base
What are signs and symptoms of metabolic acidosis?
- Depends on cause
- Hyperkalemia (muscle twitching, muscle weakness, flaccid paralysis, arrhythmias)
- Increased Respiratory rate (kussmal respirations)
Treatment of metabolic acidosis?
-Treat cause
Metabolic acidosis= what in regards to K?
Hyperkalemia
