PFTs Flashcards
definition of obstructive
FEV1/FVC <70%
restrictive disease
TLC <80% predicted FEV1/FVC elevated
sniff test
flouroscopy to asscess diaphragmatic movement
FEV1 w/obstuction
>2L mild 1-2L moderate <1L severe
obstructive flow loops
concave expiratory pattern w/relatively normal inspiratory curve
Dx reversible component
if FEV1 or FVC increased by 12% or more and absolute improvement of 200mL occurs in response to bronchodilation then obstruction has reversible component
methacholine challenge
assess airway hypersensitivity up to 50% w/allergic rhinits but not asthma will have a positive methacholine challenge if negative can rule out though
spirometry
FVC FEV1 FEV1/FVC VC
helium lung volumes
RV ERV IRV TV TLC VC FRC IC
TLC and restrictive disease
65-80%mild 50-65%moderate <50%severe
common causes of DLCO
interstitial lung disease emphysema
other causes of DLCO
CHF -pulmonary edema PHTN PE polycythemia pulmonary hemorrhage L->R cardia shunt
Measuring RV
cannot be down w/spirometry FRC-ERV
nitrogen washout
poorly ventilated or non-ventilated areas will not be included in FRC w/this technique
helium dilution technique
poorly ventilated or non-ventilated areas will not be included as part of FRC
