PF - Editing Flashcards
Who was the editor of PF?
Sally Menke
What does Menke always working with Tarantino tell us about his auteur approach?
Working/collaborative relationships are a key aspect of any auteur style. Tarantino worked with Menke on all of his pictures prior to her death in 2012. Their relationship was based on mutual respect and a shared understanding of visual style.
How was the high-quality editing recognised critically?
PF and Menke were nominated for Best Film editing at the 67th Academy Awards in 1994 but lost to Schmidt for Forrest Gump
How does the editing contribute to the narrative of the film?
The highly sophisticated editing allows the non-linear narrative structure to be formed. The film is edited into 3 independent stories, however they are all interwoven and connected via the characters and props - portmanteau structure.
What did Menke and Tarantino not know about the film?
They did not now how the film would be received
What editing technique is used in the Return to Apartment Sequence?
The prolonged tracking shot of Butch in an over the shoulder shot is typical of his auteur style to help immerse the spectator. Tarantino does not break continuity allowing tension to build throughout the scene - very mainstream
How does the editing being, for the most part, unnoticeable, have an effect?
This allows the scene to generate a sense of flow which is enhanced by a lack of transitions other than straight cuts. This immersive style creates realism, allowing them to travel alongside Butch.
How does the muted colour palette have an effect on the spectator?
There is a shift in tone/jarring realism in downtown LA compared to the vibrancy of Jack Rabbit Slims - creates an ahistorical aura
How is acentral imagining created?
Cannot see Butch’s face/emotions
How is editing used to convey surrealism in the Herion sequence?
Tarantino uses a montage alongside slow motion editing together with close up shots to glamourise Vincent’s experience and communicate the euphoria of his high. The techniques captures Vincent as he appears to float, as if in a dream. The surrealism is further enhance with the unrealistic background protection
How does Mia drawing a square on screen have an effect on spectators?
The playful, self-conscious, self-reflexive style breaks the realist illusion of the film as spectators are reminded that we are watching a construct.
