To fly a NZ registered a/c you must
- Hold a current license issued under part 61.
- Foreign pilots need a validation permit
- Australian license can convert to a NZ license under the trans-tasman mutual recognition act
a/c type rating
A pilot of NZ registered a/c or a foreign a/c operating in NZ must hold a current a/c type rating for that a/c that is either:
- Issued in accordance with CAR part 61
- Attached to a foreign pilot license and either specified in a validation permit, or validated by the pilot licensing authority of the country of a/c registry or validated by the pilot licensing authority of the country in which the NZ registered a/c is operated in
- Attached to the pilot license issued by the civil aviation safety authority of Australia if the trans-tasman mutual recognition act 1997 applies to the license
Exceptions to a/c type rating
Student pilot, or a pilot that is learning to fly a new type of a/c must get an instructors authorisation and demonstrate and gain experience flying in that new type before issued the type rating
Flying without a pilots license when dual with an instructor
May only manipulate controls if receiving dual flight instruction from a qualified flight instructor who occupies the pilot seat or acting as PIC, these hours are logged as dual flight time
What are the requirements of flying solo without a pilot’s license
- At least 16
- Hold a current class 2 medical
- Able to communicate the English language
- Authorised solo by an instructor
- Received dual instruction within the last 5 hours of flight experience
- Has had piloting experience within the proceeding 30 days.
- Demonstrated competence in basic training exercises
- During the solo the flight instructor must monitor the actions of the pilot during the solo flight
No PPL for what reasons can you not fly
- Remuneration, if the a/c is being operated for hire or reward
- On an international flight
- If any person is being carried on the a/c other than a flight examiner or instructor
PPL eligibility requirements
- 17 years old
- Hold a current class 2 medical
- Have a min of 50 hours flight time experience in the appropriate category of a/c compromising solo, dual, instrument and cross country flight time acceptable to the director (or 40 hours if the person is not seeking to exercise PPL cross-country privileges. If the person seeks to Have PPL privileges during the night they must also have night time experience acceptable to the director).
- Have valid written exam credit in all 6 theory subjects.
- Passed a flight test with a flight examiner
Privileges of a PPL
Act as PIC or co-pilot of an a/c for the category for which the license is granted for and for which the pilot holds an a/c type rating may carry passengers.
Limitations of a PPL
- Cant fly for remuneration, if the a/c is being operated for hire or reward (unless to tow a glider)
- if the a/c is being operated at night/on a cross country flight (unless they have been certified in their logbook to do this)
PPL cost sharing requirements
- Flight can’t be advertised to the public
- Crew members receive no payment or other reward for their services
- Persons carried on by the a/c including crew members share equally in the cost of the flight and no payment or other reward is required by persons on flight.
Recent experience requirements of a PIC
- To fly passengers during the day a PPL holder must within the last 90 days have either carried out 3 take-offs and landings or demonstrated competence in taking off and landing to a category A or B instructor
- To fly passengers at night the above must have been carried out at night.
- If you have not met these requirements for more than 5 years you must pass an air law exam as well as meet currency requirements.
Biennial flight review
A flight review must be completed every 2 years. Once you’ve had your flight review with a A or B instructor the instructor will sign your logbook and you can fly for another 2 years. If you sit your flight review within 60 days of the date required it counts as if you have sat it on the date required. You don’t need a flight review if you meet flight crew checks under parts 115, 119 or if you meet the agriculture currency requirements, or if you hold a current A,B or C flight instructor rating.
requirements for holding a medical certificate (PPL and RPL)
- The holder of a PPL must hold at least a class 2 medical certificate and comply with the conditions, restrictions and endorsements on the medical certificate.
- The holder or an RPL must hold a medical certificate issued under the land transport rule 1999 that is issued for class 2-5 truck licenses or passenger endorsement. This land transport medical certificate must be sent to the director within 7 days of issue.

Change in medical condition section 27c
if you or the aviation/medical examiner become aware of any change in your medical condition that may interfere with your ability to fly you must notify the director as soon as practicable and stop flying.
