What are the common features of all personality disorders?
abnormal and inflexible behaviour pattern, traced to adolescence, causes significant distress in life
appears in at least 2 areas: cognitive, emotional, impaired self id, interpersonal functions and impulsively/destructive behaviour
What is tenuous stability?
fragile personality, lack of resilience, exaggerated emotional response, don’t learn coping skills easily, overwhelmed
What is adaptive inflexibility?
cannot cope, avoid stressors, never develop new coping methods, stuck at younger developmental stage, views tend to be inflexible
What is tendency to become trapped?
behaviour creates difficult cycles, normal stressful event comes a series of difficult interpersonal conflicts
What are the 3 types of severity of personality disorders?
tenuous stability, adaptive inflexibility and tendency to become trapped

dramatic and attention seeking
What are the s&s of antisocial personality disorder?
aggrandizing, psychopathic, disregard for others, violent, impulsive, irritable, aggressive, reckless, drinking a lot, lack of remorse, conduct disorder as a kid, sees self as victim, cocky, superficial charm, exploitive in sexual relationships, tense, bored, depressed, unable to delay immediate gratification
what is aggrandizing pattern?
act or practice of enhancing or exaggerating own importance, power or reputation
what is psychopathic?
characterized by abnormal lack of empathy masked by an ability to appear outwardly normal
what meds are used to tx personality disorders?
antidepressants, mood stabilizers, benzos

teach appropriate expression of emotion, increase awareness of types of thinking, assist with decreased need for dissociation, teach stress management, teach problem solving

increase sense of value and hope, DBT, offer comfort

monitor meds, prevent harm, sleep, nutrition, increase emotional tolerance, identify emotional distress
