Common features of all mood disorders?
sad, empty, irritable mood
somatic and cognitive changes
Criteria for major depressive disorder?
at least 2 weeks of depression with at least 5 s&s
Criteria for persistant depressive disorder (dysthymia)?
at least 2 years of depression with at least 2 s&s (can’t be without s&s for more than 2 months)
non pharm tx of depression?
CBT, exercise, psychodynamic therapy, group therapy, support groups, family therapy and ECT
What does ECT treat?
chronic depression, acute mania, severe OCD, catatonia and some psychosis
Where are the electrodes placed?
unilaterally or bilaterally
How long does the seizure need to last in ECT?
at least 25 seconds
What is the normal course of tx for ECT?
usually 10-12 times at 3x a week
What are the side effects of ECT?
memory loss, muscle soreness, headache and postictal syndrome (post seizure syndrome)
Pharm tx for depression?
SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors
