general definition of personality disorder (4)
inflexible, maladaptive personality traits that affect day to day functioning are are:
- not part of cultural norms
- present across a broad range of situations
- create significant problems at work and socially
- relatively stable and dat back to early adulthood
cluster A PDs
odd or eccentric with underlying paranoia
Paranoid
generalized distrust and suspicion of others, suspect that others are trying to harm them
Schizoid
involuntary detachment from social relationships, little interest in sexual experiences with others (alone by choice, prefer it that way)
Schizotypal
odd or magical beliefs that influence behavior, eccentric appearance, excessive social anxiety, uncomfortable with close relationships with others
antisocial
disregard for the rights of others, lack of remorse, deceitful, high level of criminal activity and drug abuse; more common in males
borderline
unstable interpersonal relationships, splitting, frantic efforts to avoid abandonment, chronic feelings of emptiness, self-mutilating behavior, chameleon-like changes in personality; more common in females
course of borderline PD
symptoms are usually more prominent in 20-30s and will decrease in intensity with age
Histrionic
sexually provocative, attention seeking, overly concerned with appearance, highly emotional and theatrical
Narcissistic
need for admiration, sense of entitlement, grandiosity, believes others are envious
avoidant
social inhibition due to fear of negative evaluation or rejection (desires relationships with others, but too afraid)
OCPD
preoccupation with order and perfection, rigid in beliefs, stubborn
Dependent
excessive dependence on others to take care of them, submissive/clingy, low self confidence and require constant reassurance from others
