Chooses solitary jobs/ night shifts
Takes pleasure in few (if any) activities
schizoid
Schizoid: emotionally
cold, detached
How is schizoid personality related to schizophrenia?
May be a premorbid phase
How are schizoid personality and social phobia compared?
Schizoid: does not desire social relationships
Social phobia: desires friends, afraid of embarrassment, avoids social contacts because of anxiety
cognitive and perceptual distortions and eccentricities
- no close friends
- suspicious and magical thinking
- *may be odd enough to suspect psychosis

Schizotypal: speech
odd: vague, methaporical, over-elaborate, but still in touch with reality
How is schizotypal personality related to schizophrenia?
May be a premorbid phase
Dramatic, emotional, erratic
- impulsive, erratic, mood swings
- life-long pattern
- high on “extraversion” dimension
- short attention span
- seeks stimulation
Cluster B
Cluster B: married life
Often multiple marriages and divorces
Cluster B: defense mechanism
somatization, denial, preojection
Can be mistaken for bi-polar
Cluster B illness: borderline personality
What will medication do for Cluster B patient?
Usually will NOT improve symptoms, unless personality problems are also addressed with psychotherapy
the patients “defies social rules”
-Must be 18 or older to diagnose, with symptoms of conduct disorder before age 15 (pattern)

antisocial, no conscience, histrionic, narcissistic personality, borderline personality
No conscience: married life
multiple marriages, act as superficial charmers
