Personality Disorders definition
Deeply ingrained, inflexible patterns of thinking or feeling relating to others, difficulty controlling impulses.
The personality is painful to others and long standing, usually beginning before adulthood.
Comorbidity
People with personality disorders tend to develop Axis I disorders (personality disorders are Axis II)
Personality Disorder Criteria
- Enduring pattern of deviation
- Pattern is inflexible and pervasive across personal and social situations
- Pattern leads to significant distress or impairment
- Pattern is stable and of long duration tracing back to adolescence
- Not better explained by manifestation or consequence of something else
- Not attributed to substance abuse

Paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal
Cluster B
Histrionic, Narcissistic, Antisocial, and Borderline
Cluster C
Avoidant, Dependent and Obsessive Compulsive
Paranoid Personality Disorder
- Suspiciousness and distrustful of others
- See hidden meaning in remarks
- Tendency to see self as blameless / guiltless
- On guard for perceived attacks by others
- Bear grudges / unforgiving
- Not usually psychotic; in touch with reality
Schizoid Personality Disorder
- Impaired social relationships
- Inability and lack of desire to form attachments to others (loners)
- Unable to express feelings
- Generally apathetic; rarely experience strong emotions
- High levels of introversion
Schizotypal Personality Disorder
- Excessively introverted
- Peculiar thought patterns
- Oddities of perception and speech that interfere with communication and social interaction
- Highly personalised and superstitious thinking
Avoidant Personality Disorder
- Hypersensitivity to rejection
- Self-conscious and self-critical
- Shyness
- Insecurity in social interaction and initiating relationships
Dependent Personality Disorder
- Difficulty in separating in relationships
- Discomfort at being alone
- Subordination of needs to keep others involved in the relationship
- Indecisiveness
Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder
- Excessive concern with order, rules and trivial details
- Perfectionism
- Lack of expressiveness and warmth
- Difficulty in relaxing and having fun
Histrionic Personality Disorder
- Self-dramatisation
- Overconcern with attractiveness
- Irritability and temper outbursts if attention seeking is frustrated
Narcissistic Personality Disorder
- Grandiosity
- Preoccupation with receiving attention
- Self-promoting
- Lack of empathy
- Hypercritical and retaliatory (they will repay)
Borderline Personality Disorder
- Impulsiveness
- Inappropriate anger
- Affective instability
- Drastic mood shifts
- Chronic feelings of boredom
- Attempts at self-mutilation or suicide
