Odd, eccentric characteristics, usually loner, emotionally distant.
Cluster A: Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal
Dramatic, erratic characteristics, very egocentric, lack of appreciation for concern of others, lack of empathy, minimal functioning of conscience
Cluster B: Borderline, Narcissistic, Antisocial, Histrionic
Avoidant, anxious, and fearful characteristics, preoccupied with rules or reactions of others
Cluster C: Avoidant, Dependent, Obsessive-Compulsive
Mnemonic SUSPECT: Spousal infidelity, Unforgiving, Suspicious of others, Perceives attacks, Everyone categorized as friend or enemy, Confiding in others is feared, Threats perceived in benign events. May have diffuse delusional thinking.
Paranoid personality disorder
Difference between paranoid personality disorder and schizophrenia.
Absence of fixed delusions, hallucinations or thought disorder.
Detached or flat affect, Indifferent to criticism or praise, Sexual experiences of little interest, Tasks performed solitarily, Absence of close friends, Neither desires nor enjoys closeness, Takes pleasure in few activities (DISTANT). May still be successful in isolated jobs.
Schizoid personality disorder
Difference between schizoid and schizotypal PD or schizophrenia.
Absence of oddity of perception and thought disorder, hallucinations or delusions.
Magical thinking, Experiences unusual perceptions, Paranoid ideation, Eccentric behavior or appearance, Constricted affect, Unusual or odd thinking or speech, Lacks close friends, Ideas of reference, Anxiety in social settings (not associated with self-perception but rather paranoid fears), Rule out psychotic and pervasive developmental disorders (ME PECULIAR)
Schizotypal Personality Disorder
Incidence and etiology: 75% of people convicted of crimes, lower SES, parental deprivation in first 5 years common, high prevalence in men with AUD. Often preceded by signs/symptoms of Conduct Disorder in childhood (under 15 years).
Antisocial PD
Conformity to law is lacking, Obligations ignored, Reckless disregard for safety of self or others, Remorse lacking, Underhanded, Planning insufficient (impulsive), Temper (CORRUPT). Lacks functioning conscience and respect for rights of others. Under appearance of calmness is rage, hostility, tension, and irritability.
Antisocial PD
Identity disturbance, Disordered unstable affect with marked mood reactivity, Emptiness feeling, Suicidal behaviors/gestures that are recurrent, Paranoid ideation under duress, Abandonment sense/fear, Impulsivity, Rage that is inappropriate, Relationship instability with extremes of idealization and devaluation (I DESPAIRR).
Borderline Personality Disorder
Provocative, Relationships overvalued, Attention-seeking and uncomfortable when not receiving attention, Influenced easily, Style of speech exaggerated without details, Emotions shallow and rapid shifting, Made-up in ways to draw attention, Emotions exaggerated (theatrical) (PRAISE ME).
Histrionic Personality Disorder
Special (believes in own uniqueness), Preoccupied with fantasies, Envious, Entitlement, Excessive admiration required, Conceited, Interpersonal exploitation, Arrogant, Lacks empathy (SPEEECIAL).
Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Certainty of being like prerequisite for involvement, Rejection sensitive and preoccupied, Intimate relationships avoided, New relationships avoided, Gets around occupational work that involves interpersonal contact, Embarrassment potential prevents new activities, Self-view is one of inferiority/ineptness (CRINGES).
Avoidant Personality Disorder
Reassurance required for decisions, Expressing any disagreement is difficult, Life responsibilities assumed by others, Initiating projects difficult, Alone, Nurturance needs excessive, Companionship needed urgently at all times, Exaggerated fears of being left to care for others (RELIANCE).
