Personal Radiation Detector (PRD) Flashcards
Prepare the PRD for duty carry.
Turn the PRD on by pressing the ON button for 2 seconds .
Place the PRD in the front of holster on body, with the display facing belt buckle.
Perform a weekly test utilizing a check source.
Place the check source on the back of the PRD.
Press display button and observe reading.
Look for levels of 4 to 6.
Demonstrate proper PRD search techniques.
Blade body away, use support hand, continually press button, keep sensor to source, practice ALARA (As Low as reasonably achievable)
Demonstrate proper PRD scanning patterns.
Use a grid pattern to identify the general location of the source
Use a cross air pattern to more exactly locate the sources
Use an inverted “U” on humans
Scan 2-3 inches per seconds
Locate the radiation source.
Highest point
What is the proper procedure if the PRD reading is 2 mRem/hr. or higher (HIGH GAMMA)?
Back away until the PRD displays a value below 2 mRem/hr
Set up an exclusion zone
If LESS than 10 feet from the source, and the PRD reading is between 1.4 and 1.9, How long is it safe to be in that zone?
It is safe to operate in that zone for no more than 3 minutes.
If MORE than 10 feet from the source and the PRD reading is 2 mRem/hr. or higher (HIGH GAMMA), what 3 steps should be taken?
SIN
Contact LSS
Do not re enter the 2 mRem/hr exclusion zone
Describe the response procedures to a radiation alert on a traveler/vehicle in any primary environment.
Traveler
Refer traveler to secondary
Ask M.O.M questions
Separate traveler from luggage
Scan both systematically
Vehicle
Refer the vehicle to secondary
Separate drivers from vehicle
Scan individually
Describe the response procedures to a radiation alert on a traveler in an airport secondary environment.
Ask M.O.M Questions
Separate traveler from baggage
Scan both separately using the inverted “U” on the traveler, grid and crosshair on luggage.
Describe the response procedures to a radiation alert on a vehicle in a land border/seaport secondary environment.
Refer to secondary
Ask M.O.M Questions
Separate the driver from the vehicle
Scan both the driver and the vehicle separately, using the inverted “U” technique on the driver, grid and crosshair on the vehicle.
Describe the response procedures to a radiation alert in a secondary cargo environment.
Check the manifest and commodity
Scan commodity systematically
Determine if the commodity is known to contain radioactive material.
Name two (2) common commodities that emit natural occurring radiation.
- Bananas
- Ceramics
- Kitty litter
- Fertilizer
