Personal Protective Equipment Flashcards
What is the LAST CONTROL?
PPE
What is the hierarchy of controls?
elimination/substitution, engineering controls, administrative/work practice controls, personal protective equipment
What are engineering controls?
physical changes to workplace, examples are isolation, ventilation, equipment modification
What are administrative/work practice controls?
REQUIRE EMPLOYER OR WORKER TO DO SOMETHING
inspection, maintenance, training, supervision, alarms/signs, regulated areas
What are three frequent causes of head injuries?
falling objects, bumping heads, accidental contact with electrical hazard
What are the classes of hard hats?
Think GEC-KO cuz the gecko wears a hat in the tires commercial
class G (general) - protect against impact/penetration and low-voltage protection (2200 volts)
class E (electrical) - impact and high-voltage (20,000 volts)
class C (conductive) - comfort, limited protection (only for heads bumping against fixed objects and NO ELECTRICAL/FALLING)
What are the types of PPE? two types….
type I: provides protection from objects falling directly on top (but not side, front, or back)
type II: everything – better for non-standing workers
What are safety glasses used for?
used to protect against moderate impacts from particles
What are googles used for?
protect eyes from dust and splashes
What are the three goggle types?
Direct-ventilated: prevents fogging by allowing air, resists large particles
Indirect-ventilated: prevents fogging by allowing air, protects against liquid/chemical splash
Non-ventilated: no air allowed, may fog, no splash entry
What are face shields?
protect from
do not protect from
not for ___, so wear ____
protects face from dust or chemical splashes, do NOT PROTECT FROM IMPACT HAZARDS —–
NOT FOR EYE PROTECTION SO WEAR GOGGLES/GLASSES UNDER.
What are welding shields?
protect eyes from ___ caused by _____ light
protect eyes from ____
protect eyes from burns caused by infrared and intense radiant light, protect eyes from flying sparks/metal spatter/slag chips
What are the types of respirators?
air-______
______-supplying
air-purifying (particulate respirators, PAPR, chemical cartridge/gas mask respirator)
atmosphere-supplying (clean and breathable air)
How to clean respirators?
wash in a ______ solution and ____ by immersing in a _____ solution
wash in a detergent solution and disinfect by immersing in a sanitizing solution
How to store respirators? CDHMS
keep them in a place without DUST, SUNLIGHT, HEAT, COLD, MOISTURE
Exposure to noise levels above… can cause hearing loss
85 dB
At what decibel is hearing protection required?
90 dB
Impact noise should not exceed…
140 dB
What are the examples of hearing protection?
disposable foam plugs, molded ear plugs, noise-cancelling ear plugs, ear muffs
What are potential hand hazards?
____ absorption
___
___
____ burns
skin absorption, lacerations, punctures, chemical burns
What are potential foot hazards?
falling, crushing, sharp objects, molten metal, hot/wet/slippery surfaces, electrical hazards
What are some PPE examples for footwear?
shoes with _____ toe-caps
______ shoes
shoes with metal toe-caps, rubber shoes
What does paper-like fiber protect against?
dust and splashes
What does wool and cotton protect against?
fire resistant, dust, abrasions,
What does duck material protect against? what do ducks give you (if you attack them and are aggressive)
cuts and bruises
What does leather protect against?
dry heat, flames
What does rubber and plastics protect against?
certain chemicals and physical hazards
What are the EPA’s levels of PPE? think school system
level A: highest level of protection (positive pressure, fully resistant gloves, complete suit)
level B: highest level of respiratory protection and lesser level of skin protection (face shield, coveralls, ETC)
level C: when concentration and type of airborne substance is known and APR is met
level D: minimum protection (gloves, coveralls, safety glasses)
What PPE (complying with OSHA standards) is the employer required to pay?
____ protection
rubber ____
____
face
hard ___
______ protection
_____ wear
metatarsal foot protection, rubber boots w/ steel toes, goggles, face shields, hard hats, hearing protection, eye wear
What PPE is the employer NOT required to pay?
non-specialty footwear and eyewear, everyday clothing, lifting belts, INTENTIONALLY broken/lost PPE
What are the employee’s responsibilities?
wear PPE, attend PPE training, care for/maintain PPE
What is NOT approved eye protection? what standard***
not sun glasses or prescription glasses!!!
glasses meeting ANSI standard Z87
When is PPE used?
engineering, work practice, and administrative
Do employees ALWAYS have to remove contact lenses or glasses before putting on PPE?
No
Is ear protection is mandatory for anyone already suffering from hearing loss?
YES
When a hard hat sustains an impact, what should happen to it?
Be replaced
What are the footwear standards for minimum compression and impact performance?
ANSI
What are earmuffs required to have?
PERFECT SEAL around ear
