Prevention of infection & injury

Cleansing Baths
include bed baths, tub baths, sponge baths, shower, disposable bed bath, CHG bath
Therapeutic Baths
Prescribed bath ordered for a specific effect (sitz & medicated baths)
Who requires frequent perineal care?
patients who are Incontinent, have foley catheters, & are post op for rectal or genital surgery
Daily oral hygiene
Brush twice daily
Floss once
mouthwash
prevents & controls plaque-associated oral diseases
Denture care
removes food & debris
fragile, handle with care, do not break
brush all surfaces
Oral care in patient’s with reduced/absent gag reflexes
be wary of gag reflex
always have suction available
protect patient from choking/aspiration
Proper hair care
brushing, combing, shaving, washing
Bed bound patient hair care
use a disposable shower cap system
Feet & nail care
special care to prevent infection, odors, pain, & injury
Trim nails straight across, do not soak feet, dry in between toes (no lotion)
Special consideration for foot problems
Patients with diabetes have peripheral neuropathy (cannot feel their feet) be wary of temperature, do not trim nails just file
Occupied bed considerations
Always administer pain relief prior to making an occupied bed
determine ability to assist
conserve time & patient energy
Complete unoccupied bed
left open with the top sheets fan folded down
