Medical Asepsis Take Aways Flashcards
What is the purpose of medical asepsis
Reduces pathogenic organism & prevents the transmission of infections
What is an HAI
Infections that patient’s develop while being treated in medical facilities
Elements of the chain of infection
Infectious agent, reservoir, portal of exit, portal of entry, susceptible host, mode of tranmission
When should you perform hand hygiene
before & after patient encounters, or when there is a risk of contamination
4 factors to perform hand hygiene
- The intensity of contact with the contaminated person/object
- The amount of contact that may occur
- The procedure performed
- The susceptibility of the patient/staff to infection
What are standard precautions & what do they include
Precautions implemented towards ALL patient’s regardless of infection status to prevent infection
Includes hand hygiene, cough/sneeze etiquette, sharps safety, PPE as needed
What are transmission Based Precautions
Precautions for patient’s with/suspected infections that require additional control measures to prevent infection
3 types of transmission based precautions
Airborne
Contact
Droplet
May be combined for diseases w multiple routes of transmission
What precautions are used in patients with MDROs & C.diff
Standard & contact precautions
Isolation airborne precautions for TB patients
Single-patient negative pressure room with N95 respirators
